29 December 2007 - 16:16Nevada Supreme Court Justice Saitta again in the news

Nevada Supreme Court Justice Saitta again in the news
This is another blog on our most beloved Supreme Court Judge.

Why would anyone want to cast aspersions on the reputation of such a respected civil servant.

Just because, while she sat on the District Court bench, she was the most reversed judge in the state.

Just because the Nevada Supreme Court, of which she is a member, voted unanimously to overturn the gag order she issued on behalf of a former colleague.

Just because Steve Miller has practically made a career of pointing out her connections to the movers and shakers in the state.

Just because she was virtually unknown in Las Vegas until a close friend and Newport Beach neighbor of Rick Rizzolo appointed her to the Las Vegas Municipal Court in 1996.
— Judge Saitta went on to sit on five consecutive cases involving Rizzolo, and rendered judgments in his favor at every turn. He returned the favor with campaign fund raising events at his favorite bistro, Piero’s.

As you can plainly see, there must be some sort of plot against her.

23 December 2007 - 14:18Falconio DNA evidence questioned

BBC NEWS | Asia-Pacific | Falconio DNA evidence questioned
The forensic technique, that was a key part of the prosecution’s case against Murdoch, claims to be able to amplify very small genetic samples to create a reliable profile.

This same technique was thrown out in the Omagh bombing case in Northern Ireland.
At least in N. Ireland they have said that they are reviewing all of the cases that were based on this evidence.

This reminds me of the FBI’s claim that the gunpowder in each individual cartridge is different. Of course this is BS. But the Bureau has used it to convict people in the past. Now they say it was bad science, but the FBI won’t give a list of people that were convicted based on this questionable process.

In the various police agencies there are too many junior J Edgars and too little oversight. And when they know they’ve screwed up they let innocent people sit in jail.
Partly because they presume that everyone is guilty and partly to protect their careers.

—So much for justice for all.

16 December 2007 - 16:25Basra returned to the Iraqis

The Brits are getting ready to pack up and di di the hell out of Iraq.

They just handed Basra over to the Iraqis.

About three months ago they pulled back from the city of Basra to their base at the local airport, and by next March they plan to be down to 2,500 troops.

In a poll of 1,000 Basra residents for BBC Newsnight, more than 85% said they believed British troops have had a negative effect on the Iraqi province since 2003.
But two-thirds of those polled thought security would improve following the handover.

It’s unfortunate, but based on the behavior in other parts of Iraq, I believe that their version of security is secular in nature and consists primarily of the application of “peace through superior firepower.”

The way I see it. Basra (the city) is a test of the resolve of at least a part of Iraq.
It’s the country’s largest port and is surrounded by petroleum storage and production facilities. Leaving them with not only secular differences but with the inevitable disputes over the control of the oil and the money it generates.

The Shi’as will continue to control the area but, the Sunnis have a strong presence, so we’ll see if peaceful coexistence is possible.

One hopeful sign is that flights to Baghdad from Bosra’s international airport by Iraqi Airways have resumed and nobody is shooting them out of the sky…. Yet.

14 December 2007 - 14:16Musharraf assumes nuclear control

from the BBC: Musharraf assumes nuclear control. —Is it just me or is this a seriously frightening headline?

President Musharraf is a US supported megalomaniac who has been reported to be convinced that Pakistan cannot exist without him.
(US supported megalomaniac –Redundant)

Now he’s president instead of general, he’s still the same dictator he always was.
His takeover of the agency that controls the nukes needs to be ratified by parliament sometime in the next six months. But given his tendency to forcibly suppress anyone who opposes him I doubt that even a hostile parliament can wrest control from him.

The world gets a little scarier every day.

10 December 2007 - 12:597 Things Your Company’s IT Department Doesn’t Want You to Know

7 Things Your Company’s IT Department Doesn’t Want You to Know.
This headline is from a PC Magazine article by Michael Lasky, telling you ways to circumvent company security policy.

He says these methods are legal and safe.

First: The deliberate circumvention of company policy by any means is neither legal nor safe.

Second: This person obviously has never had to deal with security breaches, computer crashes, or government regulations.

To tell people that it’s perfectly alright to compromise a corporate network while claiming no harm can be done is irresponsible and a demonstration of either unmitigated arrogance or complete ignorance.

IM has become a major conduit for trojans and other nastiness.

The use of a proxy does not prevent that blocked site sending data to your machine. Otherwise you would be unable to see the website at all.

While U3 drives do not write to the windows registry, they do use windows memory and if there’s a virus or trojan on the drive, in all probability it will infect the machine it’s attached to and quite possibly the entire network.

Given current federal law, your company not only has the right to monitor your email. In many cases they have a legal obligation to do so.

This is another example of an irresponsible reporter using headlines to sell stories.

9 December 2007 - 23:26blog ordered removed

Pioneer Loan ordered the removal of an employee’s blog today.

It appears that one of their IT guys was forced to sit at one of the company offices dealing with customers, while he waited for one of the two people who were supposed to work that day to arrive. She had overslept.

The IT guy who was being forced to wait called the other IT guy about something, and in the course of the conversation complained about the situation.

While he was writing his blog the second man posted a single line about the incident.

In spite of her name not being mentioned, the woman took this as a personal attack, and threw a temper tantrum that lasted until that evening when she could corner one of the owners and complain long and loud.

The end result is that the second IT guy received a call from on high ordering him to remove the first IT guy’s blog.
The second man had enough common sense to preemptively remove his own blog.

The sites are now on RCNevada.

Hostility now resides at mike.rcnevada.com.
Richard’s Blog now resides at richard.rcnevada.com.

Freedom of what???

8 December 2007 - 15:44Paddington Bear at 50

In the latest Paddington book, he will be arrested and interrogated over his immigration status in a book marking his 50th birthday.

This will be the first book to be published since Paddington Takes the Test came out in 1979.

Even children’s authors seem to feel it necessary to make a political statement.

I guess there’s no place for left for innocence. That’s a shame.

4 December 2007 - 14:20Iran and the Bomb

The report from the IAEA says that Iran stopped it’s nuke building program in ‘03.

So what does King George do? He swears that they are still a threat to the entire world.

The US president told reporters at the White House on Tuesday: “I view this report as a warning signal that they had the program, they halted the program.
“What’s to say they couldn’t start another covert nuclear weapons program?”
He also added: “Iran was dangerous, Iran is dangerous and Iran will be dangerous if they have the know-how to make a nuclear weapon.”

Weapons of mass destruction. –None, the only source is apparently living quite happily in Germany after lying through his teeth.
Iranian nukes. –None, the only source being the paranoia generated by W and company.

Why did anyone vote(twice) for a man that honestly thinks that anyone who disagrees with his empire building is evil?

Democracy forced at gunpoint is tyranny.

2 December 2007 - 15:18Political Nevada

A blog that has been sitting unused since June or July is finally up and running.

It’s name is Political Nevada, and it’s supposed to be about politics and business in Nevada.

Their first post is a bit of a rant about public servants.

1 December 2007 - 11:14Euthanasia as a business

In Switzerland euthanasia has been legal since 1942.
There are only three required conditions: a documented proof of the existing disease, relatives’ disinterest in the death of a person and a signed contract, confirming that the decision to leave this world is voluntary and invariable.

Until recently only hospitals had the right to commit euthanasia. Now there are four specialized companies working in this industry. These upstart companies provide all necessary services, for a price, usually not more than 5,000 euros.

This service is not limited to Swiss citizens. As a result there is an infant industry; Suicidal tourism.
People come to Switzerland from all over Europe to end their pain with a certain amount of dignity.

In most of the rest of the so called civilized world they ban euthanasia, while the religious organizations debate suicide as sin and pain as punishment.

After all this time they are still trying to save us from ourselves. No matter how much pain we go through.
Banning any form of suicide designed to end our pain always sounds to me like Tomás de Torquemada burning people at the stake to save their souls.
