This article reminds me of “my younger days.” —My god, but I hate hearing myself use phrases like that. they remind me of how young I’m not.
In my youth, I spent a great deal of time in the wild, away from crowds, noise, and people I couldn’t avoid.
I grew up spending my summers in Western Montana, learning to fly fish, and buck bales. The hay was to make enough money for Logger Days and my next dry fly.
The mountains were always right there.
Even when I was chasing stray cattle, I enjoyed the peace in a place where all I had to do was watch my footing and avoid the occasional bear. The few bears I saw wanted to avoid me as much as I wanted to avoid them. In fact some of the cattle were more of a threat than anything I saw in the wild.
People got lost. Some were never found, some died from exposure and so on. But, if you read your local paper you will find that people go missing in the cities, they get hit by trains, cars and buses, and you’ll find very few ulcers being generated just because the fish aren’t biting.
Now my house is paid off, but I’m still working too many hours to pay off my other debts.
But soon, perhaps another two years, I’m going fishing, or maybe I’m going to sit on a sailboat, for about three months.
Then I will decide what it is I want to be when I grow up.
